I can't describe how happy it makes me that So You Think You Can Dance is back for a new season. If you hate reality shows or competition shows then you might dismiss SYTYCD as just being another one of those, but it is totally different. It is really about the talent and so much less about the judges and host (yes, I am specifically talking about how it is the opposite of American Idol which focuses so much on everything other than the people competing and their talent). Yeah, the producers are sure to work in some dumb drama from time to time, but the host (Cat Deeley, who is amazing) always brings everything back to the dancers and their dancing. (And do NOT get me started about the schmoozefest Dancing with the Stars that puts dancing way, way below the people in the show.)

So, let's get to the dancers and the dancing :)

Philip and Jeanine start out dancing hip-hop in a very sweet number. Just like the judges, I was so afraid for the young lady having to dance next to one of the most naturally talented poppers would be completely overshadowed, but she wasn't. Jeanine drew attention away from Philip and he was never jealous or greedy beside her. The chemistry was obvious and it made for an amaxing start to the show.

Asuka and Vitolio dance a Broadway number that was cute, light and fun. It looked by the numbers and good and enjoyable, but no emotion or story came through. I really like her and hope she stays - I feel no connection to him, though.

Karla and Jonathan get stuck with a cha-cha and I figured we'd miss it not having much story. But the dancers had so much fun and communicated that fun to the audience, so it was delightful. Jonathon is probably the cutest guy on the show, so that helps :)

Speaking of really cute guys, Evan is up next with partner Randi (paired quite well for height). I missed the name of the style - Jazz? - but it suits Evan's old-fashioned Broadway style very well while still showing that he has lots of other skills. I felt like he stole the show, but she really danced well, too (she didn't detract from the number anyway). They are an adorable couple.

Paris and Tony get the second hip-hop routine of the night. I like Tony's personality, but I feel like he's easily one of the weakest of this group - and since he seemed to not quite get this dance, I am scared for him trying other styles. Adam nailed the critique by calling their movements "mushy". I always accuse the show (like every other reality show) of putting in "cannon fodder" contestants and I am sure Tony is that.

Caitlin and Jason score a fun Bollywood number, but it is way too obvious that they are out of their comfort zone. A few times it felt more like an amateur recital than professional dance, but lots of fun still. They seemed out of sync. I guess I disagree with the judges on this one, because I was a little disappointed. They are both very likable dancers and I see them lasting a while.

Brandon and Jeanette brought life to a foxtrot routine in a delightful way. I really loved the way he brought her down from lift - and how she controlled her entire body throughout that move. i imagine they will both be with the show for weeks.

Now for the awkward crash test dummy dance by Ashly and Kupono . I had no idea how to react as I couldn't connect to it emotionally (and I LOVE Wade Robson's choreography), but the dancers nailed the movements. Personality and talent shown through.

Melissa and Ade dance contemporary next. The dance showcased both dancers strength and control, but, again, i didn't feel much connection to it (but I think the sucky Richard Marx song hurt that a lot). Again I'm not really agreement with the judges who really felt the emotion that i missed, but i do think the power and strength is amazing in both of these dancers.

Kayla and Matt get to Samba and blow me away - i kept thinking "Wow" over and over again. I am not a huge ballroom fan but man, oh man, did this just make me happy.

Favorites? OK, Evan just because he's so cute and multi-talented. Out of civic pride, I have to say that Kayla, who is from Aurora, CO, where I live now, is as amazing as the judges say she is.
